Former US President Donald Trump criticized current President Joe Biden for not attending the coronation ceremony of Prince Charles, calling it disrespectful, despite no US president having done so
Donald Trump criticized Joe Biden in an interview on Wednesday for not attending the coronation of King Charles III, calling it "disrespectful". Although Mr Biden has been invited to make a state visit to the UK by the new monarch, who will officially be coronated later this week, he will not make the trip. However, the first lady, Jill Biden, is expected to attend the festivities. Mr Trump was speaking with British broadcaster Nigel Farage and suggested that Mr Biden’s physical endurance might have been the reason for his absence.
In reality, no US president has ever attended the coronation of a British monarch. While the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953 was attended by a delegation selected by then-President Dwight Eisenhower, Mr Eisenhower did not attend himself. Charles has not made any public statements expressing disappointment about Mr Biden's absence, and the White House confirmed this week that Mr Biden would travel to the UK for a state visit in the near future.
Functionally speaking, if Donald Trump had been president right now, he almost assuredly would not have gone to the coronation in much the same way as joe Biden. Despite this, Republicans have uniformly refused to condemn the former president in an act of hypocrisy
