A student shouted "Trans rights are human rights" in front of Iowa's governor, who is known for her anti-trans policies.
A transgender high school senior, Clementine Springsteen, made a viral video after receiving the governor's scholar award in Iowa. During the ceremony, Springsteen shouted, "Trans rights are human rights" in front of Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, who recently signed bills limiting access to school bathrooms and gender-affirming care for trans youth. Despite this, Reynolds shook Springsteen's hand, along with Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, and they all posed for a picture before Springsteen walked offstage. The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing debate over trans rights in Iowa and the country as a whole.
During the governor's scholar award ceremony in Iowa, Clementine Springsteen was one of several students who protested against Governor Reynolds' policies. Another student wore a dress in the colors of the trans Pride flag, and yet another wore a shirt with the message "Trans Rights Are Human Rights." Additionally, some students wore enamel pins that indicated their preferred pronouns or displayed the colors of the Pride flag. Senior Miran Pettigrew protested with a shirt that said "Public Money for Public Schools," and senior Leo Friedman wore a shirt that said "I Read Banned Books." These protests were recorded in viral social media videos.
There is growing social awareness that Trans rights are inherently human rights, and that Republicans are by proxy in their opposition to trans rights, becoming anti human rights. The current republican trend of butting into the business of trans people in full totality also flies in the face of traditional republic values regarding keeping lives private, and especially out of the reach of the government. Despite that, republicans seem poised to continue their assaults on trans people, and feed into the newer narrative that republicans are anti-human rights, whilst also fueling their own hypocrisy
